Bold, proud of its power.
Scornful of human weakness but at the same time anxious and attentive protector even of the simplest forms of life. Jealous, sparing in sympathy but also a patient and generous donor of interior riches.
Difficult to conquer, arrogant and impudent in the awareness of its beauty but compliant and tolerant with all those approaching with humility. Somewhere you may enter but be careful not to misunderstand it. Used to profound silence, with no words but a voice that speaks with the force of facts.
Deeply serene, wise among the wisest, having known thousands of histories, thousands of experiences, and thousands and thousands of different people. Fast as the wind, hard as stone, unbounded in its dryness but also an expression of great tenderness, of simple and mysterious charm.
This is the desert; it is the Sahara, and more particularly the Sahara of The Great Jamahiriya: a vast expanse of sand in all its splendour crossed at the south - western end by the Tadrart Akakus Mountains, and marked by numerous wadis. Stone arches hollowed by the passing of time, immense temples of red sandstone where one of the most extraordinary and mysterious stories of Man is written, and green oases rich with life, in an exciting contrast that never stops arousing wonder and emotion.
A moving and thrilling experience, a combination of ancient and modern worlds and a tribute that the desert undoubtedly deserves.
Desert...

Besides a word, it is an image that strikes the heart, a thought, an ancient memory of a past but never - forgotten time.
It is impossible, in fact, for a word to contain the emotions that the desert can evoke when it appears before your eyes or to explain the intensity with which your senses are struck even if only by its scent.
The fragrance of spaces open to the winds, to the sun, with no fences to lessen its purity .
Your breathing becomes deeper, burning your lungs, your eyes get lost in a boundless space, where the horizon - so easily .
Perceivable in other places - mingles earth with sky, so that the common reference points cease to exist . an absolute silence that sounds more acute than the loudest noise .
Only the wind is heard .

The force of the wind has progressively levigated the rocks, once part of immense seabed highlands, thus creating the sand that, together with the wind has intensified the erosion and sketched a dreamworld, creating more sand and other fantastic images, in an endless process.
So the rocks have become natural arches where the blue sky and the yellow sand intermingle

Magnificent scenery, emotions just like those one experiences when trekking in the mountains, dominated by mighty nature that crushes man to make him a slave of such beauty.
Only the colours, continuously shading off from beige to ochre, from pink to red, and fading into the total blue of the sky, make it different.
Ten thousand years ago the transformation process of the fertile and luxuriant savannah, furrowed by Abundand Rivers and inhabited by wild fauna, began.
Oak and cedar trees, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses, and also oxen, goats and sheep lived in this area, which started.
Drying up during the last period of relative humidity until the present desertification process, that began 1500 years ago
Sons and daughters return to search for their origins, to trace man's adventure in great mother Africa. For these youngsters, who love the desert out of choice and not because they were born there, and for all those who have made the desert and adventure their life, the risk of getting lost in the dunes, of thinking they recognize a wadi, a stone, or a site, is always tremendous. But the thrill of sleeping out in the open under the stars, camped around a fire to help them fight the freezing night, is such an invaluable experience that nobody can stop them.

A Journey towards a destination that lives only in their hearts, in their memories, that forces them to go on looking for the place where the sky meets the earth.
Only the traces of the wires on the sand will remain behind them.
But for a short time, since the only real trace will be imprinted on the memory of the ones who crossed it.

The journey goes on until the sudden discover of an oasis, of a magic, emerald green oasis, precious as a jewel adorning the body of the desert. A paradise where man has cleverly managed to re-create a past, though never-forgotten, life.

A relaxing place for those arriving from far-away, but a working reality for the people living there, the oasis represents one of the greatest examples of hydraulic engineering of all time.
A complex underground canalising system with different inclinations distributes the precious water wherever it may be necessary to set in the golden sand another emerald: a tree, a bush that later will bloom.

Living in the desert is possible only for those who have its paths running through their blood.
Invisible paths that the desert reserves for its most ancient sons: expert travelers who know how to find their way by reading the stars and the traces left on the sand by the wind.
Riding on camels, the sole other living creatures capable of moving across the desert, they plough the vast expanses of ondulating sand, rippled by a gifted hand that creates curves and shining flowers, the amber crystal of the " rose of the desert ", symbol of the desert itself.

And in the desert its sons and daughters move confidently and swiftly, as if they were part of the magic.
The static rocks turn into dunes: capricious, fluid, unpredictable, they are never the same, bringing alive a landscape that in a continual process of creation and destruction is capable of transforming an apparent world of nothingness.

Nothingness that becomes a familiar reality of cultures, traditions and passions.
Because "if amazement is the first step to knowledge, the desert is amazement itself".
